Project Outline

Year 9 art students worked with animator Rozi Fuller. They began by creating abstract paintings and sculptures inspired by the work of Wassily Kandinsky. Using these artworks as a starting point, Year 9 students from the school’s Music Department were asked to create a response to the artwork as three two-minute compositions.

A group of Year 8 & 9 students were divided into three groups. Each listened to one of the compositions and created further abstract paintings inspired by this music.

Each student picked out particular sounds and phrases and created paintings to visualise these sounds. For example, regular beats in the music might suggest an ordered composition on paper whereas a vibrato saxophone might inspire a swirling twisting image.

Using storyboards, the students designed how these patterns and shapes would move and change over time, matching the way the musical sounds evolved. Then, using the Flash MX animation program, the students carefully marked out the timing of the audio, and created animated sequences of their abstract paintings to synchronise with the music.

Each student’s work has been edited together to create one visual per music track, compositing all the individual student sequences into a group piece.
