St Columbus

Watch the first animation

Project Outline

St. Columbus Primary School worked with Cartwright Hall Art Gallery.

2 classes of Year 3 children visited the Gallery and worked on a cut-out animation project. Stained glass window panels on display in the gallery inspired the childrens’ work. The children discussed the stained glass panels and then worked together in small groups to produce photo-story work based on the classic tale of ‘George and the Dragon’.

The groups then went on to add voiceovers to their finished pieces using Audacity sound recording software.

Back at school the same children continued their animation experiments, this time creating new stories. One group chose the 3 little pigs as their animated story. They created drawings to depict the various parts of the story and photographed these drawings with digital cameras. The children then imported the digital images into Windows Movie Maker and arranged their pictures to create a meaningful story. They included text and sound to create a finished short film.

The second class of year 3 students worked on the story of the Pied piper, again creating a series of comic book style images and importing them to Windows Movie Maker to create a film sequence.

An additional class of year 5 and 6 students also took part in the animation project. This group of students worked on the theme of Greek myths and decided to create the story of ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’.

Working in small groups the students divided the tale into manageable parts or scenes and storyboarded these individual parts in small teams. The students then worked on Complete Animator to create 2D animated characters.

These animation files were saved and imported to Windows Movie Maker for editing and the addition of sound effects.

Students used Audacity to produce voice-overs and manipulated their voices with the software to create appropriate characterisation for their creations.
