Watch the first animation

Project Outline

Students from year 6 worked with the Bradford Industrial Museum on their animation project. At the museum they worked on a cut-out animation film based on a ghost story of Tom the stable boy. The students created cut-out figures and backgrounds for the work and animated their own sequences, using digital camcorders and animation software. The students added voice over’s to create a finished sequence.

In school the students built on the work created at the museum by devising their own story to tell as an animation.

The class had been working on the theme of Greek myths and so decided to create their own Greek myth based on the various ideas and knowledge they had gain from their class studies.

Students worked in small groups to mind map the characters that often appeared in a Myth together with locations and events that might take place.

The class selected their favourite components of the story and produced an original Greek myth. The film was broken down into various scenes and these scenes were allocated to the students. The scenes were storyboarded into a variety of shots to create meaning in the piece before sets, models and props were created. The class first worked in small groups creating original sound tracks. They used audacity software to record voiceovers and manipulate their voices. Sets and models were then created along with clay models. Students were careful to keep continuity between the groups in terms of the look of characters appearing in the film. The students took turns in animating parts of the story that had been broken down into shots. Once the film had been completely shot, editing took place with Windows Movie Maker to produce a single completed film with the soundtrack.
